Wedding venues in south east London

This guide covers 83 wedding venues across four south east London boroughs: the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Boroughs of Lewisham, Southwark and Bexley. It is built from each borough’s official list of approved ceremony venues, plus the reception-only venues couples here also book, and we reviewed every entry on 22 October 2026. Greenwich Park is about 20 minutes’ drive from our studio in Beckenham, so these are our neighbours.

South east London weddings at a glance

  • Licensed for ceremonies: 64 of the 83 venues, including the four register offices. Thirteen of them have a licensed outdoor space, from a rooftop in Shooters Hill to pub gardens in Dulwich and Herne Hill.
  • Reception only: 18 venues host receptions but are not licensed, so the legal ceremony happens elsewhere first. One more, Eltham Lodge at Royal Blackheath Golf Club, does not say either way.
  • Register offices: Woolwich Town Hall (Greenwich), 368 Lewisham High Street (Lewisham), Camberwell House on Peckham Road (Southwark) and Danson House in Danson Park (Bexley, run by Kent County Council).
  • Notice: given in the borough where you live, at least 29 days before the ceremony. See GOV.UK on giving notice and your own council’s page, linked below.
  • Travel: the Southwark venues sit on the river opposite the City, Greenwich and Woolwich are further east, and Bexley borders Kent. From Beckenham, Greenwich Park is about 6 miles, around 20 minutes’ drive with clear roads. All four boroughs are inside the ULEZ.
  • Best for: royal and naval landmarks, river and skyline views, museums and galleries, characterful pubs and railway arches, and a handful of large hotels and halls for big South Asian weddings.

One boundary trap first. Beckenham Place Mansion has a Beckenham postcode (BR3), but it stands in Beckenham Place Park, which is in the London Borough of Lewisham, so Lewisham’s registrars marry couples there and it is listed here, not in our Bromley and Beckenham venue guide.

Choosing by style of venue

South east London has almost no country houses or vineyards, and only one barn. What it has instead is history and the Thames: palaces, a tea clipper, a galleon, a livery hall and Georgian and Regency pubs, then rooftops and hotels looking across to St Paul’s.

Royal and historic landmarks

Greenwich is the obvious starting point. The Old Royal Naval College holds weddings in the Painted Hall only as a full package with dinner, takes up to 450 for a reception, with Admiral’s House for smaller days and the option to arrive by boat. Across the road, the Queen’s House marries couples in its marble Great Hall for up to 120 and holds outdoor ceremonies, including with a mandap, on the Colonnade and south lawns. In Eltham, Eltham Palace pairs a medieval Great Hall with a 1930s Art Deco house and takes 200, and Charlton House, a Jacobean mansion, has four licensed rooms and walled gardens. In Bexley, Hall Place is a Grade I listed Tudor house by the River Cray, with a summer courtyard for ceremonies and dinner for up to 100.

Museums, galleries and unusual spaces

This is where the area beats almost anywhere else in London. You can marry beneath the hull of the Cutty Sark or on its open Weather Deck (dry hire, approved suppliers only), in Wren’s Octagon Room at the Royal Observatory (up to 60, acoustic music only), or in the Armoury of the Golden Hinde replica by Southwark Cathedral. The Horniman Museum in Forest Hill has a Victorian glasshouse Conservatory for 120 and a Bandstand for open-air ceremonies. Dulwich Picture Gallery holds ceremonies among the paintings and takes 400 for a reception. Smaller and odder: the Brunel Museum’s sunken Tunnel Shaft in Rotherhithe (Saturdays only), the concrete Dilston Gallery in Southwark Park (ceremonies only, dates offered for 2027) and the bare, war-damaged Caroline Gardens Chapel in Peckham. For a ceremony with a view, Severndroog Castle on Shooters Hill licenses its rooftop platform for up to 22, reached by spiral stairs.

River, rooftop and skyline

Southwark’s riverside is the place for views of the City. The OXO Tower’s eighth-floor restaurant and terrace can be taken exclusively for up to 250. Sea Containers London licenses its rooftop bar and takes up to 600 for a reception. Rose Court Events, at the foot of Southwark Bridge, has a licensed roof terrace and takes 700 for a reception. Glaziers Hall, a livery hall beside London Bridge, offers exclusive hire for 220, and Swan at Shakespeare’s Globe uses a Balcony Room looking over the Thames. Shangri-La The Shard has ceremony rooms around 125m up. Downriver in Greenwich, the Trafalgar Tavern’s Nelson Room has Thames-facing balconies and seats 180, and The Sail Loft takes receptions on its river terrace.

Pubs, bars and railway arches

For a relaxed day, the area’s pubs are strong and many are licensed. The Crown & Greyhound in Dulwich Village and The Half Moon in Herne Hill both include their gardens in the ceremony licence. The Crown Tavern in Lee has two function rooms and a large beer garden, the Admiral Hardy by Greenwich Market has two licensed rooms and guest rooms, and the Prince of Peckham has themed private rooms. Under the Bermondsey railway arches, Pedro’s Wine Bar and The Old Timber Store take small weddings, and Bermondsey Social Club hosts receptions only.

Hotels and big rooms

For large numbers, the InterContinental at The O2 has the biggest licensed rooms here, from its 3,000-capacity Arora Ballroom down, plus 453 bedrooms, and it markets large Asian weddings. Woolwich Works, in former Royal Arsenal buildings, licenses spaces up to 1,200. In Bexleyheath, the Delta Hotels by Marriott has the borough’s largest licensed room, the Applegarth Suite for 250, and markets self-catered Asian weddings. Dulwich College hosts Hindu ceremonies with a small fire in its Great Hall. Smaller hotel options include The Clarendon on Blackheath, The LaLiT near Tower Bridge and The Hoxton on Blackfriars Road.

Gardens, barns and villas

For something greener, Tudor Barn Eltham is a 16th-century barn in moated gardens, booked exclusively, with licensed lawns for outdoor ceremonies. Kingswood Arts in Dulwich, a Victorian mansion, licenses its terrace as well as its ballrooms, and Belair House is a Georgian villa in Belair Park with a terrace over the lawn, for up to 80.

Practical points

Read the house rules early, because several landmarks set them firmly: Blackheath Halls requires secular ceremonies starting by 4pm, Beckenham Place Mansion takes weddings on Fridays and Saturdays only, Severndroog Castle has no Sunday weddings and the Royal Observatory allows acoustic music only. Twenty-one venues say they can be booked exclusively; everywhere else, ask what else is on that day. For outdoor ceremonies, book an indoor room as your rain plan. We marked 29 venues “check” in the directory because we could not confirm current weddings, and none of the venues publishes a curfew we could find, so ask about finish times at your first visit.

The directory, borough by borough

Each borough has its own register office and its own list of licensed venues, so the directory is split the same way. Filter by style, guest numbers and ceremonies.

Royal Borough of Greenwich

Greenwich, Blackheath, Charlton, Eltham, Shooters Hill and Woolwich: 26 venues, 21 of them licensed. The register office is in Woolwich Town Hall, an Edwardian Baroque building whose ceremony rooms closed for building works in December 2024; the council’s 2026 booking page lists them as available again. Greenwich itself is the draw, with the Old Royal Naval College, the Queen’s House, the Cutty Sark and riverside taverns within a short walk of each other. Further out, Eltham has its palace, Tudor Barn and the golf club’s 17th-century Eltham Lodge, and Greenwich Peninsula has the borough’s largest hotel.

Hall Place is the borough’s historic house, and the two hotels in Bexleyheath and by the A2 suit larger or self-catered weddings. The reception venues are sports clubs and halls, and three are marked “check”.

Getting married in south east London

The four register offices

  • Greenwich: Woolwich Town Hall, Wellington Street, SE18 6PW, with the Edwardian Room (36) and Victoria Hall (120; the council also gives 130). For 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 the Edwardian Room costs £340 on Wednesday or Thursday and £453.50 on Friday or Saturday, and Victoria Hall £2,838.50 on a Saturday. A £62 statutory ceremony is for residents only, with a wait of six months or more (Royal Greenwich charges).
  • Lewisham: 368 Lewisham High Street, SE13 6LQ, next to University Hospital Lewisham, with a hearing loop. The Evelyn Suite holds 40 in total; 2026/27 fees are £304 Monday to Thursday, £372 Friday and £440 Saturday, with no Sundays. The £62 statutory ceremony runs on Wednesdays only (Lewisham Council).
  • Southwark: Camberwell House, 34 Peckham Road, SE5 8QA. The Garden Room takes the couple plus 35 guests, from £217 on a Wednesday and £441 Thursday to Saturday, and statutory ceremonies are held on Monday mornings. The council does not say which year these fees cover, so confirm them (Perfect Day Southwark).
  • Bexley: Danson House, Danson Park, DA6 8HL, with four rooms: the Johnston Room (12), Sir John Boyd’s Room (25), the Salon (45) and the Dining Room (65), not counting the couple. Fees from 12 October 2026 run from £330 for the Johnston Room on a weekday to £950 for the Dining Room at a weekend, plus an £85 booking fee (A Kentish Ceremony).

Giving notice

You give notice at the register office for the borough where you live, not where you marry, after living there for at least seven days. Notice must be given at least 29 days before the ceremony, and you then have 12 months to marry. It costs £46.50 per person (£63 if referred under the Home Office scheme). If you live in Bexley and either of you is not a British or Irish national, Kent County Council asks you to give notice at one of its main offices, including Danson House (legal requirements). Notice covers only the venue named on it, so book your venue first. Our guide to London register offices compares rooms and fees across the capital.

Licensed, reception-only and religious venues

At a licensed venue, the borough’s registrars come to you, and each council sets its own fee. Greenwich charges £607 Monday to Thursday, £811.50 on a Saturday and £969 on a Sunday or bank holiday for 2026/27; Lewisham charges £649, £906 and £985; Southwark lists £845 Monday to Thursday and £1,018 Friday or Saturday, without a year. Civil ceremonies can include readings and music but nothing religious. Outdoor civil ceremonies are legal only within the approved grounds of a licensed venue, which is why the 13 outdoor licences matter.

At a reception-only venue, the usual plan is a ceremony at a register office or licensed venue first. A common Greenwich example: the National Maritime Museum is not licensed, so couples marry at the Queen’s House next door and hold dinner in its Ocean Court for up to 550. Religious weddings take place at a place of worship registered for marriages. For Sikh couples, see our guide to gurdwara weddings in London and Kent.

Photographs and film at south east London venues

This is where we can help most, as photographers and filmmakers. The advice below is about types of venue and the rules that apply here, not about any one venue.

  • Greenwich Park needs a permit. It is a Royal Park, so a professional shoot there needs the Royal Parks wedding permit: one hour, up to 10 people, at least 10 days’ notice and no confetti. The Old Royal Naval College is separate land with its own photoshoot booking and fees, and other Greenwich council parks go through FilmFixer. Danson Park in Bexley also needs a council licence. If you marry at a venue beside a park, ask whether your booking covers portraits in the park itself. Our guide to London photo locations and permits has the details.
  • Register offices have their own photo rules. In Greenwich, photographers count as guests in the Edwardian Room and Victoria Hall, and in the statutory room a photographer can only attend as one of your two witnesses. Southwark does not count a professional photographer towards the Garden Room’s capacity and allows biodegradable confetti outside the front. Lewisham has a patio garden for photographs.
  • Museums and listed buildings work to set hours. Venues that open to the public by day often limit confetti, candles, fixings and sometimes flash near collections. Ask for the rules on confetti, drones and lighting at your first viewing and pass them to your photographer.
  • Rooftops and high floors need timing. A bright skyline behind a couple standing indoors is hard to balance, so we place portraits just after sunset, in blue hour, when the city lights come on. Terraces can be windy, so have a plan for veils and hair.
  • Arches and clubs are dark and loud. Brick railway arches have low, curved ceilings and mixed lighting, and some have trains running overhead, so ask about noise during the vows. In large halls and clubs, a ceremony or speech without a microphone is hard to hear on film: we put a small recorder on the officiant and take a feed from the DJ’s desk, and ask for some white light during the speeches. Read our guide to filming wedding speeches.
  • Drones are tightly limited. London City Airport sits across the river from Woolwich and Greenwich Peninsula, and the CAA sets flight restriction zones around airports. Commercial drone filming in a Royal Park needs written permission, the Old Royal Naval College allows no drones without authorisation, and drones are banned over Potters Fields Park by Tower Bridge. See drone wedding filming rules.
  • Plan around sunset. In London the sun sets around 21:20 in late June and around 15:50 in mid-December. In winter, a ceremony around 13:00 leaves time for riverside portraits in daylight; in summer, golden hour comes after the wedding breakfast. More in our golden hour guide and, for wet days, rainy wedding day photos.

Travel and logistics

Every London borough is inside the ULEZ, so a non-compliant car, van or minibus pays £12.50 a day. Cars built before 1973 are exempt, but TfL does not say whether a hired wedding car qualifies, so ask your car company. The riverside venues in SE1 are close to the Congestion Charge zone, which costs £18 a day and runs from 12:00 to 18:00 at weekends, so check your venue’s address on TfL’s map. Guests coming from Essex to Bexley or Erith over the Dartford Crossing pay the Dart Charge (£3.50 for a car), which must be paid by midnight the next day.

Some venues have their own arrival quirks: guests cannot drive up to the Royal Observatory, couples can arrive at the Old Royal Naval College by boat, Woolwich Works is next to Woolwich Arsenal Pier, and The Greyhound is a minute from Sydenham station. Parking is limited at most central venues, so ask about coach drop-off. Check the last trains home for your actual date, as weekend engineering works can replace trains with buses. Our guide to wedding transport in London, Kent and Surrey has more.

Your questions, answered

How many wedding venues are there in south east London?

Our guide lists 83 venues across Greenwich (26), Lewisham (10), Southwark (38) and Bexley (9). Sixty-four are licensed for ceremonies, including the four register offices. Eighteen host receptions only, and one, Eltham Lodge, does not say whether it is licensed.

Can you get married outdoors in south east London?

Yes, at 13 venues with a licensed outdoor space. They include the Queen’s House lawns, the Cutty Sark’s Weather Deck, Severndroog Castle’s rooftop, Tudor Barn Eltham’s lawns, the Horniman Bandstand, Hall Place’s courtyard and pub gardens in Dulwich and Herne Hill. Always book an indoor room in case of rain.

Which south east London venues take 200 or more guests?

Many do. The largest are the InterContinental at The O2 (up to 3,000), Ministry of Sound (1,500 for a reception), Woolwich Works (1,200), Rose Court Events and Hilton London Bankside (700 standing), Sea Containers London (600) and the National Maritime Museum (550). Eltham Palace, the Old Royal Naval College and the Delta Hotels in Bexleyheath take 200 or more for a ceremony.

What is the cheapest way to get married in south east London?

A statutory register office ceremony costs £62 in Lewisham (Wednesdays) and Greenwich (residents only, long wait), plus £46.50 each for notice. Southwark’s Garden Room starts at £217 on a Wednesday. For a reception, 28 Well Hung in Nunhead charges no hire fee, with a minimum spend. Check current fees before you plan.

Is Beckenham Place Mansion in Bromley or Lewisham?

Lewisham. It has a BR3 Beckenham postcode, but Beckenham Place Park is in the London Borough of Lewisham, so Lewisham’s registrars attend ceremonies there. You still give notice in the borough where you live, which may be Bromley.

Can you take wedding photos in Greenwich Park?

Yes, with a permit. Greenwich Park is a Royal Park, so a professional shoot needs the Royal Parks wedding permit: one hour, up to 10 people, at least 10 days’ notice and no confetti. The Old Royal Naval College next door books and charges for its own shoots.

Which south east London venues suit large Asian weddings?

Nine venues in our list publicly market South Asian weddings or 300-plus banqueting, including the InterContinental at The O2, the Old Royal Naval College, the Queen’s House (mandaps on the Colonnade), the National Maritime Museum, Dulwich College (Hindu ceremonies with a small fire) and the Delta Hotels in Bexleyheath (self-catered weddings).

Which venues have rooms for guests to stay?

The InterContinental at The O2 (453 rooms), Shangri-La The Shard (202), The Hoxton, Southwark (192), the Delta Hotels in Bexleyheath (142), the Holiday Inn at Bexley (107) and The LaLiT London (70). The Clarendon on Blackheath, the Admiral Hardy and The Half Moon also have rooms. Ask about numbers for your date.
