This guide covers 91 wedding venues in West Kent: the Sevenoaks district (including Westerham, Edenbridge and Swanley), Tonbridge and Malling, Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone, Dartford and Gravesham. We built it from Kent County Council’s list of approved ceremony venues, added the reception-only venues and the Gravesend gurdwara that couples here also book, and reviewed every entry on 22 October 2026.
West Kent in brief
- Licensed for ceremonies: 81 of the 91 venues, checked against Kent County Council’s venue search. 53 of them offer an outdoor ceremony space.
- Not shown as licensed: 10 venues, including the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara, two Gravesend banqueting halls, the Kent Event Centre at Detling and the Spa Valley Railway. Here the legal ceremony happens elsewhere, or at the gurdwara with a separate registration.
- Register offices: three of Kent’s ceremony register offices are in this area: Oakwood House in Maidstone (the county register office), The Mansion House in Tunbridge Wells and The Manor Gatehouse in Dartford. Sevenoaks and Gravesend no longer have one.
- Notice: given at the register office for the area where you live, at least 29 days before the ceremony (GOV.UK).
- Travel: this is the London side of Kent. From Beckenham High Street, Sevenoaks is about 16.5 miles, around 35 minutes’ drive without traffic; Hever Castle is about 20.6 miles (around 47 minutes); Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells are each about 31 miles (around 45 and 50 minutes).
- Best for: castles and moated houses, Georgian and medieval country houses, golf clubs with big function rooms, Weald barns and farms, and the large Sikh and Punjabi celebrations around Gravesend.
For London couples, West Kent is the nearest Kent countryside, close enough that older guests can come and go in a day. For the rest of the county, from Canterbury to Thanet and Medway, see our guide to wedding venues in East Kent and Medway.
Venues by style
Hotels (18) and country houses (16) are the largest groups, followed by historic buildings (9), golf clubs (8) and barns (7). Forty-one venues offer some form of exclusive use, and 17 are marked “check” in the directory because we could not confirm current weddings.
Castles
Five castles are licensed in this guide. Hever Castle, the moated childhood home of Anne Boleyn, offers three settings: the castle itself, the Tudor-style Astor Wing, and the Loggia in the Italian Garden with receptions in the Guthrie Pavilion. Leeds Castle sits on two islands in 500 acres, with castle, Maiden’s Tower, Fairfax Barn and marquee options, plus Battel Hall on the estate for as few as 14. Chiddingstone Castle closes to the public for weddings, with ceremonies in its glass-roofed Orangery and a lawn marquee for up to 600. Allington Castle, beside the Medway, is for sale but says weddings continue, from £10,000 plus catering for a peak Saturday (2026, per venue). Tonbridge Castle, run by the council, takes up to 80 for a ceremony, though its website was down when we checked. Our article on castle and barn wedding venues in Kent compares them in more depth.
Country houses and manors
Penshurst Place has its 14th-century Baron’s Hall under a chestnut-beamed roof, with ceremonies for up to 200 and 136 for dinner. Salomons Estate near Southborough holds one wedding a day in a Victorian mansion with its own theatre and 47 bedrooms. Nurstead Court at Meopham is a Grade I listed manor with a medieval hall, and Bradbourne House at East Malling another Grade I house, with venue hire from £3,000 (2026, per venue). West Heath in Sevenoaks starts from £9,645 (2026, per venue). Squerryes Court near Westerham is a late 17th-century manor on a family estate that makes its own sparkling wine, but its site sits behind an age gate, so confirm details directly.
Barns, farms and woodland
The Oak Barn at Frame Farm in Benenden is a listed threshing barn with cottages for 20; Oak Tree Barn near Capel is hired for whole weekends, from £14,745 in summer (2027, per venue). Bore Place near Chiddingstone is a 500-acre organic farm hired Friday to Sunday. Around Maidstone, Greenhill Farm, The Orchard at Otham and The Dreys at Squirrel Wood give tipis, gardens and ceremonies among trees. Wise Wedding Venue near Paddock Wood is woodland with lakes but no ceremony licence, so vows there are a blessing or celebrant-led.
Golf clubs and big rooms
Golf clubs are the practical answer for larger numbers close to London. Westerham Golf Club takes 275 in the evening and offers dry hire and self-catering for Asian, African and Caribbean weddings. London Golf Club at Ash has an oak-beamed Great Hall on a 700-acre estate, and The Darenth near Shoreham starts from £5,000 (2026/27, per venue). Two venues are not golf clubs but play the same role: Brands Hatch Circuit, with ceremonies for 300 overlooking the track, and the Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel, whose Heart of Kent Suite takes 400 for a ceremony and 600 in the evening.
Banqueting halls and Sikh weddings
In Gravesend, the Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara hosts the Anand Karaj in its prayer hall. Receptions then move to a hall: Elite Venue’s Sapphire Ballroom seats 230, and it markets jaggo, mehndi and chunni events; EP Banqueting Hall on the High Street takes about 200. For the biggest numbers, the Kent Event Centre at Detling markets its halls for Asian receptions of up to 1,700. Our guide to Asian wedding venues in London and Kent sets them alongside the London halls.
Hotels, inns and small days
Tunbridge Wells has the strongest run of town hotels: The Spa Hotel in 14 acres with a lakeside temple for outdoor vows, One Warwick Park by the Pantiles, and Hotel du Vin in a 1762 sandstone mansion, which can be taken over completely. For a small wedding, The Swan in West Malling takes 30, The Leicester Arms in Penshurst 60, and The Lost Village of Dode, a restored Norman church in a hidden valley near Luddesdown, 40 by candlelight.
Before you book
Read capacity figures carefully: some are evening or marquee numbers, and some come from the council listing rather than the venue. Hamlet Hotel in Larkfield says it is licensed but was not on the KCC list we checked, so ask to see its licence. We found no published curfews, so ask about finish times, music limits and when the marquee or barn must be cleared.

Getting married in West Kent
Who marries you
All six districts are covered by Kent County Council’s registration service, A Kentish Ceremony. At an approved venue, the venue’s events team enters your booking on KCC’s system and the local ceremonies team then gets in touch. From 12 October 2026 to 31 March 2029, registrars at an approved venue cost £640 Monday to Friday and £840 on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, plus an £85 booking fee, with venue hire on top (KCC fees).
The three register offices
Each fee below is weekday then weekend, plus the £85 booking fee.
- Maidstone: Oakwood House, Oakwood Park, ME16 8AE. The Study (15) is £330 or £490, the Garden Room (40) £490 or £650, and the Kentish Suite (80) £790 or £950.
- Tunbridge Wells: The Mansion House, Grove Hill Road, TN1 1EP. The Wells Room (16) £330 or £490, the Grove Room (30) £490 or £650, and the Regency Suite (55) £790 or £950.
- Dartford: The Manor Gatehouse, Priory Road, DA1 2BJ. The Manor Room (35) £490 or £650.
A basic registration with up to four guests costs £62. Register office ceremonies are booked online through KCC’s Ceremony Planner, and ceremonies can take place any day between 8am and 8pm (KCC register offices, booking).
Giving notice
You give notice where you live, not where you marry, so a couple from Bromley marrying at Hever gives notice in Bromley. It must be at least 29 days before the ceremony, you then have 12 months to marry, and it costs £46.50 each, or £63 if referred to the Home Office, when the wait can stretch to 70 days. Kent residents who are not British or Irish nationals must give notice at Canterbury, Bexley, Dartford, Maidstone, Ramsgate or Tunbridge Wells (KCC legal requirements).
Outdoor vows, receptions elsewhere and the gurdwara
KCC accepts outdoor ceremonies in gazebos, structures or outside areas during British Summer Time; from late October to late March they need the registration service’s consent. An indoor licensed room must be ready, and the registrars make the final call on the weather (KCC booking terms). If your venue is reception-only, marry at a register office or licensed venue first; Dartford’s Manor Room or Oakwood’s Study suit a short legal ceremony on the morning.
For an Anand Karaj at Guru Nanak Darbar in Gravesend, the gurdwara’s own steps are to book with them, book a marriage registration appointment with your council, meet the Anand Karaj team about six months before and finalise at least four weeks before (Guru Nanak Darbar). Our guide to gurdwara weddings in London and Kent covers the day itself, and planning a wedding in Kent has the full Kent timeline.
Photographs and film at West Kent venues
From our side of the camera, by type of venue rather than any one venue.
- Castles run on visitor hours. Where a castle is open to the public, it shapes your timings. Hever, for example, offers Inner Hall ceremonies on days the castle is closed or in an evening slot, and says portraits outside the castle, in the Italian Garden and at the Loggia are arranged for a set time.
- Medieval halls are tall and dim. Great halls often have dark timber and high, small windows. Ask whether candles are allowed, and keep the doors open if daylight is behind you.
- Know where you can and cannot shoot nearby. Knole Park in Sevenoaks looks like an obvious portrait stop, but the National Trust says commercial filming and photography are not permitted in the parkland, and no drones are allowed anywhere in the park (National Trust). Keep portraits within your venue’s grounds. See drone wedding filming rules before planning any aerial shots.
- Ridge-top views need open sky. Venues on the Greensand Ridge and North Downs look out over the Weald, and a wide view only reads in a photograph when the light is soft, so plan portraits for later in the day. Golf courses work the same way, but check when you can walk out onto the fairways.
- Marquees and tipis need light planned. White canvas gives soft, even daylight, but after dark it is only as good as the festoons and uplighters.
- Banqueting halls are loud. At a 300-guest reception with dhol and a DJ, we record speeches from the mixing desk and from a mic on the speaker, and ask for white light on the stage, since coloured washes distort skin tones. More in filming wedding speeches.
- Time it to the season. West Kent is within about a minute of London’s sun times: sunset is around 21:20 at midsummer and before 16:00 in mid-December. October and November are the wettest months, with about 11 rain days each at Heathrow (Met Office 1991 to 2020 averages), so an autumn wedding needs a covered portrait spot. See the golden hour guide and rainy day photos.
Getting there
Sevenoaks, Hever, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells are all under an hour’s drive from Beckenham without traffic; allow more on a summer Saturday. None of these districts is a London borough, so the venues are outside the ULEZ, but guests driving from London start inside it, and a non-compliant car pays £12.50 a day. Guests coming from Essex pay the Dart Charge, £3.50 a crossing by car between 6am and 10pm. Some rural venues, such as the Lost Village of Dode, are reached by narrow lanes, so ask about coach access, parking and taxi firms, and check last trains for your date, since weekend engineering works can replace trains with buses. More in wedding transport in London, Kent and Surrey.
Questions couples ask us

Yes, both are licensed for civil ceremonies and offer outdoor options. Hever has castle, Astor Wing and Italian Garden weddings; Leeds Castle has the castle, Maiden’s Tower, Battel Hall, Fairfax Barn and marquees, and lists cultural celebrations of up to 500 with the council. Chiddingstone and Allington castles are licensed too.
Can you get married outdoors in West Kent?
Yes, at 53 venues in this guide with an outdoor ceremony space, from garden gazebos to woodland clearings and a lakeside temple. KCC accepts outdoor ceremonies during British Summer Time, and at other times only with its consent. Your venue must keep an indoor licensed room ready.
Which venues take 200 or more guests?
The largest are the Kent Event Centre at Detling (1,700), the Great Danes Hotel and Chiddingstone Castle’s lawn marquee (600 each), Leeds Castle (500), Kent Life (350 in the evening), and Tonbridge School, The Spa Hotel, Elite Venue and Brands Hatch (300 each). 25 others list between 200 and 275 guests.
Where can we have a Sikh wedding in Kent?

What is the cheapest way to get married in West Kent?
A KCC basic registration for up to four guests is £62, plus £46.50 each for notice. With more guests, the Study at Oakwood House or the Wells Room in Tunbridge Wells cost £330 on weekdays plus £85. For the reception, Redlibbets publishes venue hire from £750 (2025 and 2026 tariff), and Pedham Place packages from £55 a head for 50 or more (2025, per venue).
