Kent’s castle wedding venues give you stone halls, staircases and formal gardens; its barns give you timber beams, one big open room and light that changes through the day. Both photograph and film well, but they need different plans: in a castle, heritage rules, echo and the walk to the grounds; in a barn, mixed light and rain plans.
This guide explains what each style means on camera, with a fact table of 13 Kent venues taken from their own websites. It is part of our local guide to weddings in London, Kent and Surrey. For register offices, notice and travel, read planning a wedding in Kent first.

What does a castle wedding look like on camera?
Stone rooms, sound and light
Stone and panelling reflect sound, so a voice recorded from across a great hall sounds distant. We record vows and speeches with small, discreet microphones close to the people speaking, and every speaker should use the microphone. Our guide to filming wedding speeches explains the set-up.
Historic rooms often have deep windows on one side and dark corners on the other. We never use flash during a ceremony, and our cinema cameras work well in low light, so the room looks as it felt.
Stairs, heritage rules and furniture
A grand staircase makes a natural group photo, but historic venues often have house rules on confetti, candles, tripods and furniture. Ask for the supplier guidelines and send them to us. If the venue is open to visitors on your date, ask which areas are private.
Where the ceremony room is relative to the grounds
Some venues have several buildings: Leeds Castle, for example, lists the Castle, the Maiden’s Tower, Battel Hall and the Fairfax Barn. Find out:
- how long the walk is from the ceremony room to the drinks
- whether there is a covered route if it rains
- where the confetti exit is, and whether confetti is allowed there
- how far the best portrait spots are, so 20 minutes of portraits doesn’t become 40
Gardens
Walled gardens and hedges give portraits depth and shelter. In June, golden hour starts around 20:15 to 20:30, after dinner; our golden hour guide gives every month.
What does a barn wedding look like on camera?
Beams and one big room
A barn often holds the ceremony, meal and dancing in one space, with a turnaround in between. Tell us when the turnaround happens, so we photograph the ceremony layout first.
Mixed light and candles
The challenge in a barn is colour, not darkness. Daylight through the doors is cool; festoons, candles and lamps are warm. Ask for warm white lighting, avoid strongly coloured uplighters near the top table, and keep the doors open in daylight where the venue allows. Candlelight looks wonderful on film, but many venues limit naked flames, so ask before you order decorations.
What happens if it rains?
A barn is its own rain plan for the meal and the party; the ceremony is the part to plan. In Kent, outdoor ceremonies are accepted during British Summer Time, from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October; outside those dates they need the Kent Registration Service’s consent. The venue must keep a licensed back-up room, and the registration staff make the final weather call. Cooling Castle Barn is in Medway, which runs its own service.
Met Office averages for London Heathrow (1991 to 2020) show about a 25 to 30% chance of a wet day even in summer. Our rainy wedding day plan covers what we do when it pours.
Castle or barn: how do they compare for photos and film?
| Castle or historic house | Barn or estate | |
|---|---|---|
| Ceremony light | Directional window light, darker corners | Bright through open doors by day, warm and low by evening |
| Sound | Stone echoes; microphones close to speakers matter | Softer, but a full barn gets loud |
| Portraits | Gardens, staircases, archways, old walls | Fields, lanes, barn doors at sunset |
| Rain | Indoor rooms usually ready; check the licensed back-up | Everything under one roof |
In mid-December, sunset is around 15:50, so a ceremony around 13:00 leaves daylight for portraits. See our winter wedding guide.
Can you fly a drone at a Kent castle or barn?
Often, yes. Drone aerials are an optional extra with us, where the venue and the airspace allow. Under the Civil Aviation Authority’s drone code, the pilot needs a Flyer ID for any drone of 100 g or more from 1 January 2026, and an Operator ID. Your venue’s permission comes first. Wedding shoots at National Trust places are arranged property by property, and drones can’t fly on National Trust land without authorisation. Our guide to drone wedding filming rules covers the airfields near Kent.
Getting to Kent venues from London
From our studio in Beckenham, Hever Castle is around 47 minutes by car, Maidstone around 45 minutes, Tunbridge Wells around 50 and Canterbury around 1 hour 15 minutes. These are traffic-free times, so allow longer on a Saturday. Travel is included within 50 miles of Beckenham; Canterbury is about 57 miles away, so for east Kent, ask us.
Kent County Council charges £640 on weekdays and £840 at weekends and bank holidays for a ceremony at an approved venue, plus an £85 booking confirmation fee (fees from 12 October 2026 to 31 March 2029, checked October 2026).
From behind the camera
At a historic venue, the first things I ask for are the supplier guidelines and a floor plan: together they tell us where we can stand, where the confetti exit is and how far you will walk between each part of the day. At a barn, I ask what lighting will be on during the ceremony and whether the doors stay open, because that decides every frame.
Ten spare minutes for the walk from the ceremony room makes any castle or barn day calmer. See our approach to wedding photography and wedding films.
Frequently asked questions
Can you get married at Hever Castle or Leeds Castle?
Yes. Both publish wedding packages on their own websites. Hever Castle offers four options: the Castle, the Astor Wing, the Italian Garden or a ceremony only. Leeds Castle lists the Castle, the Maiden’s Tower, Battel Hall, the Fairfax Barn and marquee spaces, with ceremonies for up to about 100 guests. Check current dates and numbers with each venue.
Can you get married outdoors at a Kent wedding venue?
Yes, if the venue is licensed for it. Kent County Council accepts outdoor ceremonies in gazebos, structures or outside areas during British Summer Time; outside it, they need the Kent Registration Service’s consent. The venue must keep a licensed room ready, and the registration staff make the final weather call. Medway runs its own service, so check there.
How much does a registrar cost at a Kent wedding venue?
Kent County Council’s fee for a ceremony at an approved venue is £640 Monday to Friday and £840 on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, plus an £85 booking confirmation fee. These are its fees from 12 October 2026 to 31 March 2029, checked in October 2026. Venue hire is extra, and Medway sets its own fees.
