A wedding album is a designed, printed book of your photographs, and most come in one of three forms: a press-printed photobook, a lay-flat album with thick rigid pages, or a fine art album with archival papers and a handmade cover. Parent albums are smaller copies, or smaller selections, for your families. This guide explains each type, what changes the cost, how the design process works, how long it takes, and whether you can order one after the wedding.
An album is one of the things worth asking about when you compare studios. Our guide to choosing a wedding photographer and videographer covers the rest of the list.
Is a wedding album worth it?
For most couples, yes. The reasons are practical as much as sentimental:
- Files get lost. Phones are replaced, laptops die, cloud accounts lapse. A book on a shelf survives all of that.
- People actually look at it. A gallery of several hundred images gets scrolled. An album gets passed around at Christmas, and grandparents who would never open an online gallery will sit with it for an hour.
- It tells the story. An album isn’t the gallery in print. It is the day edited down to the photographs that matter, in order, with room to breathe.
What an album isn’t is urgent. It doesn’t have to be bought when you book, and it doesn’t have to be the biggest option. More on that below.
What are the different types of wedding album?
| Type | Pages | Printing | Cover | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photobook | Thin, flexible pages with a visible fold | Usually press-printed | Printed or simple hardback | A budget keepsake or a guest book of extras |
| Lay-flat album | Thick, rigid pages that open completely flat | Photographic or press-printed | Usually fabric or leather | A main album that shows panoramic spreads |
| Fine art album | Thick pages, archival papers, often lay-flat | Photographic or fine art printing | Handmade: linen, leather, velvet and similar | A main album built to last for generations |
| Parent albums | Usually match the main album, smaller | As the main album | Matching or simpler | Gifts for parents and grandparents |
The names overlap. One maker’s “lay-flat album” is another’s “fine art album”, so ask what you are actually getting: page thickness, paper, printing method and cover.
What is a lay-flat album?
An album whose pages open completely flat, with no dip in the middle. Because the pages are thick and rigid, a single photograph can run across both pages of a spread. That matters for wide pictures: the whole room during the first dance, the mandap from the back of the hall, a group of 80 on the steps. In a photobook, the fold would cut through somebody’s face.
What makes a fine art album different?
Three things, mainly:
- Paper. Archival papers, matt or lustre, chosen to last. Deep colours and skin tones look richer and the pages don’t show fingerprints as easily.
- The cover. Usually handmade from materials such as linen, leather or velvet, often with a debossed name or date.
- The design. A fine art album is usually designed by hand by the photographer, spread by spread, rather than dropped into a template.
Our own album service is design led: we design each spread by hand, and our fine art albums come in a choice of covers and papers. You can see what is included with our wedding photography.
Parent albums: copies or their own selection?
Parent albums are usually smaller versions of your main album, printed at the same time, which keeps the cost down because the design work is already done.
For many families, though, a straight copy isn’t quite right. At a wedding where two families each hosted their own events, each side may want more of their own people and their own day. Ask whether parent albums can have a different selection, and whether that adds design time.
For multi-day weddings, you also have a choice for your own album: one larger album that runs from the mehndi to the reception, or a main album for the wedding day with a smaller one for the events before it.
What affects the cost of a wedding album?
We don’t publish album prices here, and album prices vary so much between makers that a UK average would tell you very little. Bridebook’s 2026 photography guidance places an album in packages at the top of the range, at £3,000 and above, which reflects how much an album adds to a quote.
What changes the price:
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Size | Larger pages cost more to print and bind |
| Number of spreads | Each extra spread adds printing and design time |
| Paper and printing | Archival photographic papers cost more than press printing |
| Cover | Handmade leather or linen costs more than a printed cover |
| Design | Hand-designed spreads and rounds of changes take the photographer’s time |
| Copies | Parent albums and extra copies add to the total |
When you compare quotes, compare like with like: the same size, number of spreads and cover. For the bigger picture of what photography costs, see our guide to wedding photographer costs in the UK.
How does the design process work?
- Your gallery arrives. You can’t design an album until you have your photographs.
- You choose favourites. Mark the images you love in your online gallery. You don’t need to choose every image; a good designer fills the story around your choices.
- The first design. The photographer lays out every spread, in the order of the day.
- Your changes. You swap images, move spreads and ask for changes. Allow for a round or two.
- Final approval. You sign off the design, the cover and the papers.
- Printing and binding. The album is printed, bound and checked, then delivered to you.
The hardest part is step two. A full wedding usually gives several hundred photographs, and our guide to how many photos to expect from your wedding explains why a well-curated gallery makes choosing much easier.
How long does a wedding album take?
Longer than the gallery, always, because it can only start once the gallery is delivered and you have chosen your favourites. After that it depends on how quickly you reply at each stage, and on the maker’s printing and binding time, which is usually counted in weeks, not days.
In practice, the slowest stage is almost always the couple. Life gets busy after a wedding, and the gallery sits in a browser tab. Set yourselves a date to choose. Our guide to wedding photo and film delivery times shows how the album fits in after your photographs and films.
Can you order a wedding album after the wedding?
Often, yes. Many studios will design an album after the wedding, once you have seen your gallery and your budget has settled, but not all of them do, so ask whether yours does before you book. Ask too whether the price is held or will follow the studio’s prices at the time you order.
Ordering later is one of the easiest ways to spread the cost, and our guide to spending less on photo and film without regretting it has more ideas like it. In the meantime, download your full-resolution files and keep two copies in two places.
From behind the camera
Designing an album is a different job from editing a gallery. A gallery keeps every moment worth keeping. An album has to choose. I start with the photographs a couple have marked, then look for the pairs that belong together on one spread: a father’s face on the left, his daughter walking towards him on the right. The spreads with fewer images are almost always the stronger ones.
The other thing I watch for is people. When a couple choose their favourites, they choose photographs of each other. The album is where the grandparents, the cousins and the friend who travelled from abroad need a place too, because in twenty years those are the pages people stop on.
Frequently asked questions
Is a wedding album worth it?
For most couples, yes, though it doesn’t have to be bought on the day you book. Files on a phone or a hard drive get scrolled past and, over the years, lost when devices change. An album is the version of your wedding your family will actually pick up, and it needs no software, passwords or subscriptions to open.
How much does a wedding album cost in the UK?
It varies widely with the size, the number of spreads, the cover, the paper and how many copies you order. Bridebook’s 2026 photography guidance places an album in packages at the top of the range, £3,000 and above. Ask each photographer to price the album you would actually want, including any parent copies.
What is a lay-flat wedding album?
An album whose pages open completely flat, with no dip in the middle. The pages are usually thick and rigid, so a single photograph can run across both pages of a spread without losing a face in the fold. Most fine art wedding albums are lay-flat, while cheaper photobooks usually are not.
Can we order our wedding album after the wedding?
Often, yes. Many studios will design an album after the wedding, once you have seen your gallery and your budget has settled, but not all of them do, so ask whether yours does before you book. In the meantime, keep your full-resolution files backed up in two places.
